I think the fact that some politican has asked not to review the real API sighting that panicky situation might occur if there were evidences that the API has reached above 150. I have recently heard from an unconfirmed source that someone (politician) has made the decision that all these API reading in Sarawak should only be announced once the figure is being confirmed. I would think that yesterday worsen haze situation was not attended to by these people who are supposed to serve the people. Why are there no plan to do some cloud seeding?
Can we have the reading directly feeded from the instrument on the internet? How was Malaysian API came about? What is the formula? Is it complying to the AQI standards? API are facts figures.
All around the world, an API of more than 300 will cause warning to be issued. The basis of API (AQI or PSI) has been established by the EPA through Airnow initiatives. The reading is from a scale of zero till 500. There is not measurement above 500. (This is an index, not unit measurement)… with the exception of Bolehland
Here is how API/AQI/PSI is measured: (sources airnow.gov)
That is how EPA sets the standards.
I have checked that someone updated wikipedia as of this march to add in Malaysia measurements which could exceed 500 and where 500 being the mark for warning.
